Dr. Arnold Schwarzenegger receives honorary doctorate degree

"It has always been my way to think, which may be a little on the radical side", says Honorary Doctorate recipient Arnold Schwarzenegger

The University of Bayreuth awards the honorary doctorate to Arnold Schwarzenegger in recognition of his outstanding commitment to climate protection, inclusion and social equality. He is only the 31st person to receive this honor in the university's 50-year history.

Honorary doctorate recipients from previous years include former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Margot Käßmann, the former chairwoman of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), and Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel (1928-2016). In his speech at the award ceremony, Schwarzenegger said: "I am very grateful for this award and see it as recognition of my work in the fields of climate protection, integration and social justice. I am convinced that we must all work together to make the world a better place." Schwarzenegger has long been a committed advocate for environmental and climate protection. In 2017, he founded the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative, which aims to promote sustainable solutions to the global climate crisis.

The actor and former bodybuilder has also repeatedly called for social inclusion and equal opportunities for all. In 2019, he founded the Schwarzenegger Institute at the University of Southern California (USC), which is dedicated to promoting inclusion and social justice.

University President Professor Stefan Leible praised Schwarzenegger's exceptional commitment: "Arnold Schwarzenegger is a role model for many people around the world. He has achieved great things in his life and has used his influence for the benefit of others. We are proud to have him as an honorary doctor of the University of Bayreuth.
