North Korea Fires Suspected Ballistic Missiles

South Korea and US Accuse North of Arms Proliferation

Pyongyang Tested New Hypersonic Weapon, Simulates Nuclear Strike

SEOUL, South Korea (AFP) - North Korea fired multiple suspected short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters on Monday, South Korea's military said, the latest in a recent spate of weapons tests.

The United States and South Korea have accused North Korea of providing artillery shells, ballistic missiles, and other military equipment to Russia in violation of UN sanctions.

North Korea's state media reported that leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test of a new hypersonic weapon named the Hwasong-16B, calling it a key part of the country's nuclear deterrent.

The missile launch comes just days after North Korea simulated a tactical nuclear strike on South Korea in a military drill, raising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea also carried out a test launch of a Pyoljji-1-2 missile on Friday afternoon.

The latest missile launches underscore North Korea's continued pursuit of advanced weaponry despite international condemnation and sanctions.

The United States and South Korea have strongly condemned North Korea's weapons tests, urging Pyongyang to return to denuclearization talks.
